A LIST OF BIBLE STUDY MATERIALS AND
A RECOMMENDED SEQUENCE FOR READING THEM
Part 1
The following list contains the titles of certain books, pamphlets, tracts, selected
articles and essays extracted from various religious journals and magazines and
also some specific chapters chosen from assorted books. While we believe these materials
will, under the blessing of God, prove beneficial to any child of God who’ll read
them, these materials have been particularly chosen with three types of people in
mind: (1) the younger Christians who are just beginning their discipleship; (2)
the younger pastors who are at the start of their Biblical studies; and (3) those
Christians who seek a more thorough, integrated understanding of basic Bible doctrine
or those seeking light upon some basic Bible doctrine or current issue with which
they’ve been wrestling. In the following list the items on Page 2 are individual
articles, essays, chapters and papers. The items on Page 3-5 are entire books or
sets of books. We recommend that all the items on Page 2 be read first in preparation
for reading the items on the other pages. Above all else we especially recommend
the items on Page 2 which set forth Christ’s personal view of Scripture. Believing
Him to be the very Son of God and perfect in all His ways, we believe His view of
Scripture is the right view of Scripture. His view of Scripture should be our view
of Scripture.
We have no claims or titles wherein to boast. We make no pretense about being an
“authority” or having infallible knowledge upon any subject. However we believe
we are correct in saying that the following materials exhibit certain characteristics
by which they commend themselves to us for serious, judicial and prayerful
consideration. First, we believe these materials are Biblically faithful.
They honor God’s Word as inspired and authoritative and they set forth truths contained
therein. Second, we believe they are Theologically integrated and consistent.
Third, we believe they are Imminently practical. Biblical and theological
truth that doesn’t lead to a godly, Christ-like attitude and walk is worthless.
These materials, prayerfully studied and graciously experienced, will influence
our daily lives. Fourth, we believe they are Culturally relevant. Many present-day
issues and cultural problems are addressed in these materials. Fifth, we can honestly
say that these materials were not just academically, mechanically, coldly, nor randomly
selected but we have found them Personally helpful in our own Christian pilgrimage.
Finally, it is important to say that our recommendation of these specific materials
should not be regarded as our carte blanche endorsement of everything in these materials
nor of everything their particular authors believe. God’s Word states, “Great men
are not always wise.“ (Job 32:9).
Perfect consistency is not to be found in any human. It should be remembered that
truth is what we seek and truth is sometimes found in the mouth of a lying
Abraham, an adulterous David, a cursing Peter and even a Christ-hating high priest.
But while we accept the truth from these men when they speak it, we are not required
thereby to endorse all they said or did. Truth is what we seek wherever it can be
found and truth is that which is in accordance with the Word of God. In all that
a Christian studies the Berean example (Acts 17:10-11) should be followed and the
apostle’s exhortation (1 Thessalonians 5:21) should be heeded. “To the law and to
the testimony: if they speak not according to this (God’s) Word, it is because there
is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:20).
